Mala Workshop

  • Sadhana Yoga Louisville 1125 East Kentucky Street Louisville, KY, 40204 United States (map)

A mala is a string of 108 beads with one bead as the summit or head bead called a ‘sumeru.’ Malas are used as a tool to help the mind focus on meditation, or count mantras in sets of 108 repetitions. Mala beads hold a lot of mystery. They're made in a range of different colors and materials, and while they’re used for generally the same reason, they mean something slightly different to all who wear them.

The mala is traditionally held in the right hand and used in two ways; in one method, the mala is hanging between the thumb and the ring finger. The second finger is used to rotate the mala by one bead toward oneself with each repetition of breath or mantra. In the other method, the mala is hanging on the middle finger, with the thumb used to rotate the mala just as explained; one bead at a time. Either way, the index finger is never used to touch the mala. (The index finger represents ego, seen as the greatest impediment to self-realization in ancient Hinduism). The practice begins at the summit or head bead and continues around the loop until the head bead is reached again.

In Hinduism, the head bead is never passed over, so if more than one round is planned, the mala is turned around to proceed again in the reverse direction.

Come learn how to make a Mala! You can make one for yourself or for someone on your Christmas list. No matter who it's for, this is bound to be a fantastic crafty day!  In this two hour workshop you'll learn how to make your own Mala while also experiencing the healing sounds from a beautiful crystal bowl played by Elise Dixie Jane. You will be guided by Dixie in how to set an intention and focus your energy into the Mala.

You will have two options of Malas to create:

1. $70 Chakra Mala- Onyx (solid black) reduces emotional traumas around the aura. Also known as one of the most powerful protection stones.

2.  $50 Tassel Mala options-

Rose Quartz (pink) is a heart opening stone that leads you into deeper compassion, forgiveness, and non-judgement. Allows one to create self love that radiates onto others.

Lava Rock (textured and grey) is a grounding stone with 72 minerals that balance the  central nervous system. Many folks enjoy diffusing their essential oils on this stone.

Dalmatian Jasper (cream and black spots) assists in helping us recognize our strengths and weaknesses as one. Enhances spiritual grounding while the black spots, also known as Tourmaline, creates protection for the wearer.

Red Jasper (red) is a simulator of chi, life force, and Prana. Enhances ones ability to remain confident and powerful in decision making.

Amazonite (green and blue) is the stone of communication and creativity. Reminds one to speak their truth with kindness and loving vibrations.

Aventurine (darker green) enhances self confidence and self optimism. Allows ones self worth to reflect onto others and create a deeper sense of self appreciation.

Carnelian (orange) is a powerful solar plexus stone that enhances ones Prana power. Stimulates ones decision making and brings forth abundance in all areas of life.

When signing up for the workshop please indicate which type of Mala you would like to create.
